In the marine environment where light is absorbed and scattered quickly at shallow depths, dolphins maintain contact with one another through acoustic communication. Research led by Laela Sayigh has demonstrated that each individual possess a unique, distinctive signature whistle, much like a fingerprint or name. I have added to the Sarasota Dolphin Whistle Database catalogue of 2024 individuals, which we can use to monitor the population over time. This also involved identifying nonsignature whistles, shared whistle types, that may serve various purposes from signaling group cohesion to an alarm. Collaborator
